My innovative land acknowledgement project asks students to engage with Native American pasts, presents, and futures. In this multi-step research assignment, students expand their historical and cultural awareness by identifying which Native tribe(s) originally occupied their hometown or favorite vacation spot. After referencing tribal websites, social media pages, and tools like the Native Land Map, students explain the tribe’s current needs and oral traditions. By the end of this interdisciplinary project, students not only contribute an ethnically diverse story of their chosen community, but they also see their scholarship as a key opportunity to advocate for Native peoples.
